So, the iphone 4 has been out for about a month, it hit the press hard with its fabulous design and functionality, it’s speed, it’s beauty. it’s apps, it’s facetime, its retina screen, it’s all round perfectness. But then, what’s this, a you tube video claiming aerial issues, then another showing the signal dropping out, then another 700 or so new videos showing the now famous antenna issues and whammy is your mammy the press have another field day, this time instead of hyping the iphone 4, condemning it as an apple failure.

Enter Steve (CEO of APPLE) Jobs stage right, and a small press briefing and man did he put those antenna issues to bed, in one fell swoop. Yes the man is a hero of the modern age, he loves his role as Apple’s commander in charge, and he joys in bringing us the gadgets and products we love. If you didn’t catch the press conference then to put it into a few non-techie words he showed us that all smart phones have an antenna issue, when the handsets are held in a non conformist way, in fact some smart phones have much worse reception issues than the iphone 4, and in all honesty, who holds their phone as awkwardly as the youtube videos show anyway.

So, antenna issues and worries out of the way, why is now the right time to be buying the fantastic iphone 4. Firstly, if you have never had a smartphone before, and there are lots out there from different manufacturers, then you want a smartphone that does everything, you want to be able to share everything with your friends, you want to be able to take pictures and videos and send them straight to flikr  and youtube, you want to show off the latest and best apps (*applications on the phone - smartphones are all about the apps!), you want to be able to check your facebook account, upload your thoughts and comment on your friends profiles, you want to be able to play the latest games, read a book, or plant a new field of goodies in farmville. The iphone 4 is not the only smartphone that does all these things, but it is the only smartphone that does all these things effortlessly, easily and beautifully.

Surely I can get an android handset cheaper? well yes, and no. Android is also a great platform for apps, but there just aren't quite as many, and the quality of most of them just doesn’t cut the mustard. there have been major issues with phones using the android system and their compatibility with the apps, mainly around screen size/resolution and camera qualities (take the very cheap HTC Tattoo for example - a lovely little phone, but with a shockingly poor camera and screen size which limits the apps available). At the end of the day, you can’t escape the fact that the majority of apps are made for the iphone first then changed and redeveloped so that they work on android. You want apps that work, that you can share with friends, you want your phone to do all the things your friends phone can do, right? Answer - iphone 4.

But the iphone 4 is so expensive... well, it is, and it isn’t. Like all smartphones it is available on pay as you go and contract  and this means that the handset itself will cost anywhere from £free - £599. but lets say you take out an average phone users contract - say about £35 a month - now this tends to get you 600 minutes - unlimited text messages and unlimited internet and the handset will cost you just over £100.00. Now most smartphone contracts come with a similar deal, although you might get the handset for free, but for an extra £100 the iphone 4 is well worth that little extra. But I already have an iphone 3g or iphone 3gs ... don’t worry, now is the best time to upgrade - for two simple reasons, the first being that the phone networks are offering the same deals for upgrading as they are for new customers (this is great) and the second is that if you put your old iphone 3g or iphone 3gs up for sale on a site like ebay - you will still be able to sell it for top dollar, if you wait another 6 months then prices are sure to drop. In fact, if you sell your old iphone 3gs on ebay you could afford to buy a brand new iphone 4, on pay as you go, and it would only cost you about £100 ! - now that is a bargain.
